The Discovery Center

The Discovery Center will meet at South Cumberland Assembly of God, located at 21 East Elder Street in South Cumberland. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The cost for attending the program will be $35.00 which will help fray the cost of supplies and transportation. There are only twenty spots available for participation in the Discovery Center and they will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. To reserve a spot, return a completed registration form along with $35.00 by June 1 to South Cumberland Assembly of God c/o Mallery Latgis. You may register by mail or in person but please do not mail cash. After the June 1st deadline, any remaining spots may still be filled although a $5.00 late fee will have to be assessed. It is simply much easier to plan ahead and keep expenses down if participants are registered on time.

FAQ's

What is the Discovery Center?

The Discovery Center is a summer program designed to assist children between the ages of eight and thirteen in developing their natural curiosity about the world around them. In most schools today, students learn by sitting in desks and listening to lectures. While this is a very valid approach, the DC has something different in mind-learning how to learn! Over the course of nine weeks, participants will be exposed to a wide range of topics, from biology and chemistry to art and medieval culture. This is accomplished through interactive demonstrations, field trips, and other hands-on activities, many led by professionals in their field.

When and where does the DC meet?

We will be meeting at South Cumberland Assembly of God, located at 21 E. Elder Street, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-8:30 p.m.

What topics will you be covering?

So far, our subjects include ecology, plant physiology, ornithology (the study of birds), chemistry, electricity, art, medieval history and culture, astronomy, medicine, paleontology, and a variety of others. Examples of trips include a fossil dig, a visit to the local health system, a nature hike at Rocky Gap State Park, and a trip to the FSU Planetarium.

Is there any cost to participate in the Discovery Center?

In order to help defray the cost of supplies and transportation, a $35.00 registration fee must be submitted with the completed form. After the June 1st deadline, a $5.00 late fee will be charged. It is simply much easier to plan ahead and keep expenses down if participants are registered on time.

How do I enroll my child in the program?

It's easy! Just complete the registration form and submit it with your payment by June 1st to South Cumberland Assembly of God, c/o Mallery Latgis. There are only twenty spots available for participation in the Discovery Center, so sign up early and reserve yours! We will still accept applicants up until the night of the first meeting, but a late fee will be charged after the deadline.

Does my child need to bring anything with him/her to meetings?

T-shirts will be handed out during the first meeting. These shirts must be worn on all field trips. Please also send along a water bottle, especially since some of our trips will be outdoors. A small pack to carry the water bottle and a journal (which will be provided) would also be useful, but is not required. If your child carries an EpiPen or inhaler, please let us know on the registration form.

What is the Learning Center? Is it the same as the Discovery Center?

The Learning Center is separate from the Discovery Center, though it is held at the same location. The Learning Center will meet on Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00 p.m. During these times, tutors will be available to help children with academic subjects such as mathematics, reading, writing, and science. This service is available for free to all who wish to receive assistance, whether they are registered to attend the Discovery Center or not. If you are registering for the DC, it would be helpful to let us know if your child plans on attending the Learning Center as well. This is just for planning purposes, however, and no pre-registration is required.
